feminism.. or something like that

My junior year of college changed my life. As I sat through lectures in both my Sociology class and African American Literature class, I was exposed to the state of gender equality or more specifically, the lack thereof. As I learned more about the challenges that women face, I was shocked, appalled, and moved. I can confidently say that my life hasn't been the same since that semester came to a close. My passion for women to have the same opportunities that men experience grew into a life mission to change things, to make them right, to make a difference.

I read an article over the summer about women dedicated to changing the lives of girls and women that deeply moved me. As I closed the magazine, I experienced hope in that the challenges facing women are being addressed and joy for the steps being made to address them, improving females' lives around the world. The women in the article are doing what I hope to do with my life, and what I think many of us hope to do with our lives, make a difference. For some that means pursuing a career, for others that means raising children, but for me that means working with women.

I'm not sure what this will look like quite yet, but for now it means a lot of reading, volunteering, and learning. It's not because women are better, different yes, but not better. But because I believe that both male and female are of equal importance, of equal value, and equal worth and I want to share that message with the world. Starting here.. it's scary and exciting to share such a big piece of my heart. But here it is.
